What Is the Esthetics State Board Exam (and How Do You Prepare for It)?

Practicing the Practical Exam in class at RSDS Academy.

In Wisconsin, esthetics students prepare for both a written exam and a practical (hands-on) exam.

The written portion is a multiple choice exam that focuses on theory-based knowledge, including topics like infection control, skin science, skin care services, and safety procedures. Much of this information comes from Milady curriculum and is reinforced throughout our program.

If you’ve been researching esthetics school, you may have come across the term “state board” and wondered what it actually means.

The state board exam is the final step required to become a licensed esthetician. It’s designed to ensure that every licensed professional has the knowledge and skills needed to work safely, effectively, and within state regulations.

Aestheticians study a variety of subjects including anatomy & physiology, electricity, chemistry and more.

For many students, the idea of “state boards” can feel intimidating at first. But preparation doesn’t happen all at once it’s built gradually dedicated time and practice.

At Renewed Spirit Day Spa + Academy, students are consistently exposed to the concepts and skills that appear on the exam.

The WI State Practical includes a mock facial demonstration with specific steps.

This includes:

    •    Repetition of core procedures

    •    Structured facial protocols

    •    Sanitation and safety practices

    •    Hands-on demonstrations and workshops

    •    Practice exams and review sessions

As students move further into our program, mock practicals and guided review sessions help them become more comfortable with the testing format and expectations.

By the end of training, the goal is for the state board exam to feel familiar rather than overwhelming. At that point, it becomes less about memorization and more about understanding the flow of a service, maintaining safety standards, and working with confidence in the treatment room.

If you’re considering esthetics school, it’s helpful to know that state board preparation is built into our learning process. Students are supported not only in developing their skills, but also through the registration process and preparation for both the written and hands-on practical exams.

Over time, this consistent approach allows our students to build the knowledge and experience needed to approach the state board with confidence and ultimately pass.
