More Than Just Facials: What Students Actually Learn in Esthetics School

Microchanneling student workshop at Renewed Spirit Day Spa + Academy

When people think about esthetics school, they often imagine learning basic facials and skincare routines. But as students move through training, they’re introduced to a wide variety of techniques, modalities, and hands-on workshops that build real treatment room confidence.

In the evening esthetics program, students begin with Milady theory fundamentals while gradually layering in practical skills and demonstrations. As the program progresses, learning becomes more interactive and hands-on.

Students are introduced to foundational theory topics such as infection control, skin science, electricity, and product knowledge. This early phase helps students understand not just how to perform treatments, but why they work and when to use them.

Students are introduced to foundational topics:

• Infection control

• Chemistry

• Electricity

• Anatomy, physiology & histology

• Skin analysis

• Skin care products

• Facial protocols

• Treatment room setup

• Client consultation

As the program progresses, learning shifts from theory into demonstration and hands-on workshops. Students begin exploring treatment room setup, sanitation practices, and consultation skills while gradually building confidence with facial techniques and skin analysis.

From there, modalities are layered into the learning experience. Students are introduced to tools and treatments such as LED therapy, microcurrent, nano-infusion, ultrasound, and microdermabrasion. They also explore advanced exfoliation techniques, dermaplaning concepts, and customized treatment planning based on skin needs.

As training continues, students begin learning and practicing different speciality treatments and advanced modalities including:

• Facial cupping

• Gua Sha

• Lash Lifts and Tints

• Face and Body Waxing

• Brow Waxing & Laminations

• LED light therapy

• High frequency concepts

• Microcurrent

• Ultrasound

• Nano-infusion

• Microdermabrasion & Hydradermabrasion

• Chemical exfoliation

• Dermaplaning

• Back facials

Lash Lift + Tints & Brow Lamination + Tinting services techniques.

Throughout the program, interactive workshops help connect theory to practice. Students participate in activities focused on massage techniques, product knowledge, device demonstrations, and skin analysis using tools like the Woods lamp and skin scope. These sessions are designed to build comfort with both the technical and client-facing aspects of esthetics.

Later in training, students expand into additional service areas including makeup, lash and brow enhancements, and specialty techniques like cupping, gua sha, and back facials. These experiences help students see how esthetics services can be customized and combined.

As students move forward, clinic-style learning becomes an important part of the experience. This is where students begin working through full services, building timing, improving consultation skills, and gaining confidence in treatment planning.

Hands-on workshops and clinic experience help students apply what they’re learning and perfect their craft.

What often surprises students most about our school is how much variety exists within our esthetics program. Beyond the basics, they’re exposed to multiple approaches, modalities, and techniques that can be layered together based on individual client needs.

As students move forward, clinic days allow them to build confidence working through full services, consultations, and customized treatments.

This progression, from Milady theory, to demonstrations, to workshops, to clinic experience all help students gradually build both knowledge and hands-on confidence throughout their program and also prepares them for State Board testing for licensure.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll continue sharing more about the structure of the program and what students can expect as they move through their esthetics education and Wisconsin State Boards.
