Build a Loyal Social Media Following

From shifting your mindset away from sales-first to creating connection-first content, to simple ways to build your email list and engage with followers in a meaningful way, this episode is packed with advice you can implement today.

And in today's episode, I wanted to dive in a little bit on social media. I think that social media is kind of one of those places for many of us that is just a mystery. And I feel like there is oftentimes this struggle to know what to post, when to post, how reels work, the algorithms.

It's a full-time job. I think that it can be overwhelming and stressful. And I just wanted to give a little bit of my insight on social media.

Now, I'm not claiming to be a social media expert. This is just through my years of experience in building my business and doing some research and taking insight from other experts and kind of meshing it into my own. So here are a few things that I want to say about social media.

And I would love to hear if you feel the same way or your thoughts on this, and we can continue this conversation over on Instagram. I am solo.spa.bosses over there. I also have a free Facebook community, Spa Business Building Community.

If you'd like to join that, I'd love to have you. But here are just a few things that I want to say about social media. Now, in my opinion, social media is not for selling.

Now, when it comes to businesses, when you have a business, I feel like we are always... We just believe that it's for selling. Like if we're a business, that all we need to do is sell.

Now, I don't believe that selling is or should be the number one priority on social media. One, I think it is way too stressful. And here's what I think social media is for.

I think that social media is for being social. That is why it was created. They want you to be obsessed and addicted to their platform, and they do a fantastic job of doing that.

I get sucked into the scroll and watching other people's videos and all those types of things. I think that we all do. But it's for being social.

And in that, I mean, what does being social entail? I think being social entails building a community, nurturing relationships, having conversations with others. I think social media is about providing value, and that is valuable content, content that your viewers want to see, whether that's educational, whether that's entertainment.

Nobody wants to feel like they are always being sold to. And I think that once you kind of shift that mindset of, I don't have to sell. If you can just try to build a community, engage with your followers, nurture those relationships, provide value, then selling is going to be easy.

You're going to start attracting people who want your services when you're... And it's okay to post those videos and images of you doing services and providing content, because when you're building that trust, you're building the know, like, and trust with your guests. And that is number one, because when your followers start to trust you and trust your knowledge, they will want to buy from you and book services from you.

So don't focus so much on putting out those promotions, putting out the sales, buy this product, provide value, provide education, provide entertainment, however that feels right for you. Don't stress about trying to jump on the trends and do all the things. Showing up consistently in a way that feels right for you is going to help build that know, like, and trust.

If showing up every day, twice a day is just so overwhelming, but you can manage three times a week, then do that. But do it consistently, because people notice the consistency, and so does the algorithm, and then you will be seen to others who are looking for your content. So that's number one.

I also think that it is super important to build an email list, and you can 100% do that on social media. And I don't think that a lot of spa businesses focus so much on building an email list. And matter of factly, I don't believe that there are a lot of spa businesses who are actually utilizing an email list.

And I will tell you, it is probably the number one way to nurture an audience. One, because you don't own social media. It can go out at any time.

So if you're only focusing on social media and you are banned from your social media account, because let me tell you, it happens. I've had it happen to quite a few friends who had very, very large following. They had no way to contact or get in touch with any of their followers because they had zero email lists.

They lost all of their followers. They had to create a new account and start from scratch. But if you are collecting emails and you are utilizing that email list to nurture your audience, to send valuable content, send your promotions, talk about the openings that you have.

If you have a last minute cancellation, nurture that email list, collect emails off from social media so you can start building and nurturing that list because you own that list. If someone is signing up to be on your email list, now don't be sketchy and just taking people's emails without their knowledge, or you need to make sure that you have consent to send them emails. If they are signing up on your email list, you have permission to send them emails.

And if they don't value that content, then they can unsubscribe at any time. So a few ways that you can collect emails is you can have a link, if you have like a link in a bio, your link tree to say, sign up for my email list. Now, typically most people aren't just wanting to sign up for an email list.

Most people don't want to be bombarded with emails, but if you're giving them value, maybe it's typically called a lead magnet, but if you are giving them some sort of free resource to say, hey, I have this PDF on the top 10 stretches for low back pain or a checklist for a nighttime routine or any sort of free valuable content that they can join your email list and you send them over this PDF images, whatever it may be, then they are more likely to sign up for your email. You can even have a pop-up. So if someone, you're directing someone to go to your website, you have that pop-up on your website that is, hey, join my email list, get 10% off your first service, get a free eyebrow wax with your first service, whatever that is, some sort of value added content so that they want to join your email list.

Another way, now, this works really well for me, but if you're wanting to build community on your social media, and I really just don't think that anybody does this. I haven't ever had anybody send me a thank you for following them. And I try to send every single person who starts following my accounts a thank you.

I will message them and say, thank you for the follow, little smiley face, little hand hearts, little heart. But it just shows that you are a real person. You are acknowledging that they are following you, that they are there.

And I think it starts building that relationship. You're nurturing them. They're starting to grow that trust with you.

They realize that they are important to you. Treat them like a human being because it is an actual person on the other side of that keyboard. So send thank yous to every single person that follows you.

And you also want to make sure that you are commenting and engaging with every single person that comments on your post. Do not just post and ghost. Make sure that you are finding a time to post that works for your schedule, that you can engage for at least 15 minutes to like other people's posts, to engage and comment if someone is commenting on you.

One, the algorithm picks up on that. Two, people love it. They want to be acknowledged.

If they are commenting on your post and you are not commenting back, eventually they will stop commenting or engaging with you because they are like, oh, well, she's not there. She's not a real person. Like she doesn't value me.

They'll just stop doing it. So make sure that you are nurturing them and following up with them. So those are just a few of my social media fields.
