A Clear Plan for Business Success
Welcome to the Spa Business Building Podcast, where we're diving in and having real conversations about all the things that are helping us attract clients and build thriving businesses as solo beauty and wellness professionals. I'm your host, Tiffny Nadolny. I'm a licensed esthetician, massage therapist, and spa business mentor to solo spa bosses who are ready to take their business from surviving to thriving.
So whether you're a new solo spa boss or seasoned, this podcast is for you. Welcome back solo spa bosses to the Spa Business Building Podcast. Today's episode, I'm talking about business strategy.
And I know that a lot of businesses, a lot of business owners don't start with the strategy for their business. And I know that I didn't in the beginning. And I started seeing the ramifications of not having a plan.
When you don't have a plan for your business, it's hard to know where you want to go. And it's hard for you to see the steps that you need to take to improve your business, to attract more clients, to reach your goals. So having a business strategy is like having that roadmap to success for your business.
It's a clear plan that guides your actions and helps you achieve your goals. So it's important because it helps you to stay focused. Having that strategy helps you see what matters most to you and your business and you will know where you're going and why.
It's great for decision making. When you have a strategy, you can make informed decisions. You will know exactly what actions will move you closer to your goals.
It's also good to have strategy because then you can plan or see, identify those opportunities for growth and expansion. Like when is a good time to hire a virtual assistant or to delegate tasks? When is it a good time to expand your business in any way?
So that's what we're talking about today. So you have the reasons why a strategy is important. And it can be really confusing and overwhelming to know, how do I strategize my business?
How do I create action plans if I'm not really sure where I want to go? So my advice is to sit down and start creating those goals for yourself, short-term goals and long-term goals. Where do you want to see yourself in a month?
Three months, six months. Then look farther out, 12 months, three years, five years. Like what are your ultimate goals for yourself and your business?
If you can sit down and just think about what your goals are in your business and personally, if you're someone who is saying, I want to move out of my parents' house. I want to buy my own home. I need to purchase a new car.
I know that my child is going to need braces in a year. Whatever it is, whatever those personal goals are, you can start there because your business goals essentially affect your personal goals. If you can make more money in your business, you're going to make more money for yourself.
You can plan that profit for yourself. So sit down. If you have a whiteboard or you can type it out or write it out.
I'm a writer. I like notebooks and paper. It just helps my brain flow more smoothly.
So that's how I like to plan. But however planning works best for you, sit down and create that plan. Just writing it out, do a brain dump.
Then the next thing you're going to do is you are going to make sure that you have your brand solid, that you know what your mission is, you know what your values are, you know what your unique selling point is that makes you stand out to other clients in your area. And you're going to have your perfect person clearly defined. These are three very important things when it comes to creating your brand.
And I think this step is missed entirely for small business owners. And you don't know what you don't know, and that's okay. But I am telling you now, you need to clearly define your brand.
And it's not about what your colors are, what your fonts are. Well, yes, that is your brand. But these three main points, your mission and values, unique selling point, and your perfect person is what really brings it all together.
When you have those things defined, it's easy to know who you're marketing to, who you're talking to, where you want to go. If you know what your values are and what you stand for, then you know it's easy to map out your future. So next, you are going to clearly define your goals that you just jotted down and made a board on.
You're going to take a look at those short-term goals, those achievable milestones for yourself. And maybe that is, I want five new clients a month. I want 10 new clients a month.
I want to make $1,000 more a month. Whatever those smaller short-term goals are, write those down. Then clearly define those long-term goals.
Those bigger objectives that you want. In one year, I want to hit $100,000 for the year. I want to have $15,000 saved for a put down on a new car.
Whatever those long-term goals are. Next, you're going to create a plan for your marketing. You're going to take a look at what your goals are, what your short-term goals are.
If you know what your short-term goals are, then you can sit down and say, I am looking at creating a plan that I can attract new clients into my business because I want to have five new clients a week. So how am I going to do that? How am I going to create this plan?
One, you need to make sure that you have a solid online presence. Your website is good with clear pictures. Your social media is up to date.
You're posting regularly. That doesn't mean every day. It just means on a regular schedule that works for you, that is consistent because consistency is key when it comes to everything in your business, and that you have your Google Business profile complete, up to date, and ready to go.
You also need to make sure that you're networking. If you have other professionals in the industry that you can reach out to, collaborate with, create promotions with, get out there and network, it doesn't have to be in your industry. It can be boutiques, it can be bakeries, wine bars, pet spas, anything like that that you can create promotions with to cross promote, get in front of other audiences, collaborate with.
That is another way. Create the plans for that. Next, you need to create your financial planning.
And honestly, this should probably come before your marketing, because when you know how much money you need to make, the breakdown of your cost per services, how much you need to budget for when it comes to your expenses, like your overhead, your retail that you're purchasing, your supplies that you're using, how much you want to pay yourself, and how much you need to put into savings when you have that clearly defined and you know exactly what your finances are. It's easy to then take a look at that picture and say, wow, this is what I need to make. How many clients do I need?
Okay, this is how I know that I need 10 clients to reach this goal, which is however much more a month than I need to do this. So that should probably go before your social media planning, because then when you know your finances first, then it's easier to create that marketing plan behind it. Next, you're always going to be improving yourself with reach out to your clients, get that feedback, do it anonymous, and I have said this before in past podcast episodes, but putting out an anonymous feedback form for your clients, they don't have to give their name because they don't want to hurt your feelings.
So they don't want to say anything negative, but if they're not coming back, then they're not giving any feedback. You don't know how to improve yourself. So sending out those feedback forms so you can learn and grow.
Always continuing your education, whether it's your skill building for your craft, or it's education for your business building. You should always be trying to improve yourself in that manner, and making sure that you are staying adaptable to the trends in the market, in the economy, and that you can flow with it, and adapt your business strategies as needed. So there you have it.
