Tips to Avoid "Maskne"- Acne Breakouts Due to Wearing a Mask
Now that wearing a face mask has become part of our daily accessory, you may be starting to notice more breakouts around your chin and cheek areas. Here are several tips to help you combat those pesky breakouts.
Make sure that you are washing your face twice daily- Cleansing the skin twice daily helps to wash away the dirt and bacteria that can be sitting on top of the skin. Putting the mask on top of the dirt and bacteria can lead to breakouts, by that it traps all of that into your pores.
Regularly exfoliate your skin- Exfoliating the skin helps to remove the build-up of dead and allows for new skin cells to reach the surface, making your skin appear more smooth, soft, and even-toned. However, make sure not to over-exfoliate the skin. Over-exfoliation can weaken the skin's barrier, which leads to other skin problems. Over-exfoliating can also dry the skin out, which makes the oil glands produce more oil, in return can cause breakouts because that oil can become trapped in the pores causing acne to form. Exfoliating one to two times weekly is preferred.
Use a spot treatment- Using a salicylic treatment only on your breakouts can prevent your whole face from drying out and causing more breakouts.
Stay hydrated- When your skin becomes dry and/or dehydrated it weakens the skin's barrier and can also make your skin dry and flaky. Those flakes get trapped in your pores and mix with the bacteria in your mask which can create breakouts. The solution....drink lots of water and add a hyaluronic acid serum to your daily skincare routine.
Skip wearing makeup- Wearing makeup is just one more thing that can add to your breakouts. If you're not wearing makeup that is meant for acne-prone skin, chances are your makeup can be adding to the reasons that you are breaking out.
Wash your mask daily- Dirt, oil, and bacteria are hiding in your mask. If you're not switching it out daily or washing it daily, you're putting all of that back on to your face each day. Keep a few clean masks at home and remember to wear a new one daily, or switch to disposable and don't reuse.
