The Key Step to Healthy, Glowing Skin

Who doesn't want healthy, glowing skin? Making sure that you add this key step to your weekly skin routine will help you to achieve this very goal.

Exfoliation.....Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. If you remember from our last post that our skin cells have a life cycle and as we age this life cycle slows down. The old, dead cells that are left behind sit on top of our skin making it dull and heavy. Exfoliating skin weekly removes the dead cells and helps the new cells to shine thru.

There are different forms of exfoliation....mechanical exfoliation which is removing the skin cells physically using motion such dry brushing, facial rotating brush, microdermabrasion, salt or sugar scrubs, loofas....

Chemical exfoliation involves the use of acids such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), beta hydroxy acids (BHA), Retinols, and enzymes which are all common forms of exfoliation during a professional facial.

Your specific needs and skin concerns will determine the appropriate form of exfoliation and how often to exfoliate.

Believe it or not, there is such thing as too much exfoliation. Over exfoliating, or using the wrong exfoliating products, can be damaging to the skin and can cause problems such as acne and sensitivity in the skin. There is a misconception that exfoliating daily will help control acne breakouts or blackheads. This is quite the contrary. Daily exfoliation can sensitize your skin making the skin thin and inflamed. Over exfoliating strips the skin of its natural oils (sebum), when this happens the skin works overtime to produce more sebum. This becomes a vicious cycle and creates more acne because the skin is essentially over-reacting to this process.

See your Esthetician to determine your exfoliation needs.
