Our Skin Barrier

What is a skin barrier and how can we support it?

Our skin’s barrier is the outermost layer of our skin that acts as its first line of defense against environmental pollutants. There are many factors that can wreak havoc on our skin including UV rays, pollution, harsh skincare ingredients, cold & wind, toxic chemicals, and many others. These factors can make our skin’s barrier vulnerable and weak causing inflammation and sensitivity making it appear less healthy.

Barrier damage occurs when skin experiences too many negative factors such as poor diet, lack of exercise, harsh skincare ingredients, over-exfoliation of the skin, and overuse of alcohol.

Skin will begin to lackluster and elasticity and will appear dull and saggy. It may become dry and irritated or oily and acne-prone.

Improving the health of your skin’s barrier is important. Healthy skin looks radiant and retains moisture. It has a healthy elasticity and appears plump. For a healthy skin barrier, it is important to always wear SPF, keep skin hydrated inside and out, consume a healthy diet full of antioxidants and omegas, skip harsh skincare ingredients, and be careful not to over-exfoliate the skin.

It is also important to use skincare ingredients that nourish and feed the skin. Using products that balance and help to reduce inflammation and sensitivity is key in the health of your skin barrier.

How healthy is your skin’s barrier? Are you using harsh ingredients? Does your skin feel tight and dry? Does it feel oily all the time? Are you suffering from inflamed acne? Is your skin red and irritated, or sensitive? These are all signs of an impaired skin barrier.
